Dr. DeRamus’ Top 10 Tips for Parents of Children with ASD

  1. Focus on your child’s strengths.
  2. Find ways to make life more predictable.
  3. Make sure your child knows how to ask for a break.
  4. Have a “calm down” plan.
  5. Understand that theory of mind is impaired. (Theory of mind is the ability to understand that other people have a different set of thoughts, beliefs, etc. than you do.)
  6. Consider whether your child’s challenging behavior could be related to symptoms of ASD.
  7. Consistency is key.
  8. Follow through.
  9. Help children generalize their skills.
