Autism Awareness: Let's Look at the Positives

Family running along beachAutism is a classified neuropsychiatric disorder. Autism is a disorder that exists on a spectrum that encompasses varying degrees of impairment. Simply put: autism looks very different from person to person. A lot of times we tend to focus on the impairments that can come to those diagnosed with Autism, but let's take time to recognize a few of the many positive attributes that can be associated with Autism.

  1. Strong Sense of Self

The word autism itself has Greek origins from the word “autos” meaning “self”. Autistic individuals tend to live and learn in their own world. They know what they want, what they like, and what they do not like. They are not easily swayed by others, and they do not tend to follow crowds. They behave in a way that is true to themselves.

  1. Aptitude For Brilliance and Ingenuity

Autistic individuals can be very intelligent and possess numerous characteristics that lend them to be very forward thinkers. Some of these admirable traits include enhanced memory, the ability to spot patterns, think outside of the box, and they can possess enhanced observational skills. In fact, many people with autism go on to be very successful leaders in their field.

  1. Honesty

People with Autism tend to value the truth, and have a tendency to be honest to a fault. They tend to be honest to themselves and to others, and do not sugar-coat things. This honesty is a true gift.
