What is Speech Therapy for Speech Disorders?

Speech Therapy focuses on treating speech and language disorders, helping individuals improve their ability to communicate effectively. It includes work on both expressive and receptive language skills, as well as nonverbal communication. Through a variety of specialized techniques and exercises, Speech Therapy targets the root causes of communication challenges and provides practical solutions that enhance a person's ability to communicate confidently in a variety of situations.

Techniques include perceptual exercises, sound production training, swallowing and hearing exercises, and augmentative communication methods like sign language or picture boards for those who benefit from alternative communication. These may also include breath control exercises, voice therapy, and use-it-or-lose-it practice scenarios with coaches.

How Does Speech Therapy Work?

Speech Therapy involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech and language disorders. Our team of experienced speech-language pathologists (SLPs) works closely with each individual to develop an individualized treatment plan designed to meet their specific needs and goals.

The process begins with an initial evaluation, where the SLP assesses the individual's speech and language abilities. From there, a personalized therapy plan is created, focusing on specific goals. Typically, a therapy plan involves 1 to 2 sessions per week, with each session lasting 30 to 60 minutes, and may include individual or group-based approaches depending on the needs of the patient.

Dr. Ritu Chandra

Welcome from the Founder

Dr. Ritu Chandra, MD, FAAP

Welcome! I'm Dr. Chandra, a pediatrician and the founder of Preferred Medical Group. My family and I are proud to call Alabama home, and I've had the privilege of caring for this community since 2007.

As a pediatrician, I've always been passionate about providing the best care for children, but I recognized the need for both primary care and mental health services, which is why I've made it a priority to offer these services alongside pediatric care in my practice. It's important to me that every family has access to comprehensive care in one place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to support the health and well-being of our community.

It's truly an honor to be trusted with your family's health, and I'm grateful to serve this community with the love and care that it deserves. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives — I look forward to supporting you and your family for many years to come.
